THE Dunkirk spirit has paid off for Green Howards veterans who witnessed the British retreat from France in the Second World War.
A visit to the regimental museum, in Richmond, was called off in September, as there was not enough fuel.
However, 42 old soldiers from the Scarborough area boarded a bus laid on by Wallace Arnold and made the journey across the North York Moors yesterday.
The party viewed all the exhibits, which include equipment they used in the early years of the conflict, more than 50 years ago, then had lunch at the Kings Head Hotel.
Museum spokesman, Major Roger Chapman, said: "It was very disappointing that they were unable to be here in September, so we are delighted to be able to welcome them now in this special visit to the museum.
"They have many memories of their time in the regiment to share and we know they will find all our displays interesting. We are very grateful to Wallace Arnold for their kindness in making this visit possible.'
