RESIDENTS are being urged to lock doors to keep out burglars during the festive season.
Stockton police are concerned about the number of burglaries in the Stockton, Thornaby and Billingham areas, where thieves have not even had to force their way into homes.
Many thefts have occurred while people have been in their house or garden, so officers are encouraging residents to always keep their door locked.
Detective Inspector Stewart Swinson said: "Over one quarter of all house burglaries this year have been committed by thieves who have gained access to the house through an unlocked door or open window.
"On many of these occasions, the householder has actually been inside the house or garden, but still this has not deterred the thief.
"Whether you are in your home or just outside, always lock your door and shut your windows. A burglar needs only seconds to get into your home and steal your property.
"Not only will this cause a great deal of distress, but you may find your house contents insurance is invalid."
Det Insp Swinson said burglars often saw houses as easy pickings at this time of year.
