Among those at the ceremony, at the University of Durham, Stockton campus, was human sciences student Carol Taylor, of Billingham, who was awarded the Diane Watts Memorial Prize for Personal Achievement.
Carol, who juggled her family commitments and studies, as well as coping with dyslexia, received her award from the mayor of Stockton, Councillor Pete Andrew.
University provost John Hayward said: "The achievements of mature students like Carol, who carry many household and family responsibilities, deserve a special mention.
