HEADTEACHERS from the North-East have written to Prime Minister Tony Blair to congratulate him on investing money in the area's school buildings.
In May, the Durham Association of Secondary Headteachers wrote to Mr Blair raising concerns about the condition of school buildings.
Now a second letter has been sent acknowledging the investment of £6m of New Deal funding for repairs to schools in County Durham next year.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the chairman of the association, David Grigg, said: "Government announcements on funding for improving play areas and science laboratories are equally appreciated.
"So, too, is the extra money directed to schools by the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Education.
"What impresses us most, however, is the announcement of £7.8 billion for education as part of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
"This sends a strong signal that the Government is willing to invest heavily in the future of education in a drive for improvement.
"Better buildings will form a platform for better teaching and learning outcomes"
