THE Tees Forest is urging youngsters in the North-East to turn their festive greetings into living trees with a Christmas recycling scheme.
Schools in Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland are being asked to collect old Christmas cards which will then be recycled in the New Year to make paper and cardboard products.
For every ton of Christmas cards collected from schools, Tees Forest will plant 100 trees in the area's community forest which covers 352sq kms. Every school in the scheme will get a recycling education pack.
Lorna Willis, coordinator, said: "We are hoping it will be a green Christmas this year for the Tees Forest where we are hoping more than 1.5 million Christmas cards will be collected by more than 250 local schools.
"The scheme not only helps to improve the environment by reducing Christmas waste but through planting hundreds of trees it is also helping to create a valuable educational resource for the future.
Local authorities and ICI will be collecting the cards from schools and delivering them to SWS Ltd in Hartlepool where they will be recycled. Any school interested in the scheme should call (01642) 515643
