FERDY Murphy and Adrian Maguire look unstoppable and on Friday the pair had a Newcastle double with two of the West Witton stable's up-and-coming stars, Astro Lines in the novice chase and Supreme Breeze in the novice hurdle.
Astro Lines had been off the course for nearly two years and, although just three of the six starters were left by the seventh fence, Maguire's mount won well enough from off the pace to suggest that this win was just a beginning.
He is entered in the novice chase at Catterick tomorrow and, if running, could well take all the beating, despite a tougher task. Maguire, however, is booked for Ichi Beau in a similar event at Aintree, also tipped to win, so JP Macnamara takes up the reins on Astro Lines.
Supreme Breeze, second to Murphy's Truckers Tavern at Wetherby on his previous start, jumped well and the trainer praised his assistant John Supple for his schooling after the Newcastle win.
The West Witton trainer looks to have an excellent team altogether. On Saturday, the Haydock winning ride by Michael Naughton on Fornaught Alliance was outstanding.
The young jockey, who began his career at Mary Reveley's, was all but pushed out of the race on Murphy's runner, then lost his stirrup irons at the fourth-last. But he never gave up and drove his mount to snatch victory near the line.
Another young rider to join the Reveley camp is former Irish amateur Brian Murphy, who had his first winner this side of the water when partnering Profluent at Ayr on Saturday for his Lingdale boss. He said afterwards that he had five winners for Christie Roche.
At Wetherby's Sunday meeting, where racing was fortunate to go ahead, the young Irishman, who has been with Mrs Reveley for just three months, shone again in a double. He won on Konker in the novice handicap hurdle and on Let's Fly in the bumper.
Tim Easterby has also had a sound start to the season and at Newcastle his Skillwise, under Russ Garritty, beat uncle Mick Easterby's Flat Top by a good six lengths.
However, Scotton Green was beaten at Wetherby despite being odds on in a two-horse race. Garritty did get his name on the scoresheet as he opened proceedings aboard George Moore's well-backed winner, Premier Drive.
Leicester saw the Easterby-Garritty pairing in top form when Simply Gifted landed the novice chase. This leading juvenile hurdler missed last season through leg problems and now looks set for a big season over the bigger obstacles. He may next go to Haydock for a similar event.
Form can be doubtful with the very changeable going, but among the eye-catching seconds this week Brian Ellison sent out Fatehalkhair to a 33-1 runners-up spot under Richard Johnson at Cheltenham in the Independent Novices Chase over two miles.
Although his nine wins have been at Sedgefield, it will be no surprise to see him land a bigger race in stronger company.
Watch out too for Impertio, from Peter Beaumont's stable, which looked the winner at Wetherby on Sunday until the going took its toll and he tired near the line, giving Jamie Mogford the chance to overtake on Brian Rothwell's Foreshoreman.
Beckdale, runner-up in the bumper for Mick Easterby, is another to put in the notebook.
On the all-weather, it's been a case of follow-up wins. Mark Johnston won again with Exclusion Zone, Joe Fanning up, and should continue. Patrick Haslam sent out You're Special to a fourth success on the sand, adding to his three turf wins, Carol Williams having the ride.
Les Eyre, whose summer was not as sparkling as usual, took a win with Amaranth under Tony Culhane.
The tips for tomorrow have already been mentioned, both Ferdy Murphy's. As far as today is concerned, good things are thin on the ground, but at Ascot there are two interesting entries in Richard Fahey's Dhaudeloup and Mary Reveley's Bhutan in the Bison Group Handicap Hurdle at 3.40.
The former has been well backed in recent runs, but disappointed somewhat. The latter is ultra-consistent, but this is a tough race. Watch the market and try a little each way on both.
