Newcastle United 1 Sunderland 2
Niall Quinn inflicted double derby heartache on Newcastle as Sunderland came from behind to repeat last year's triumph at St. James' Park.
On an afternoon of high drama, Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer saw his 83rd-minute penalty saved by Thomas Sorensen after Republic of Ireland striker Quinn had met Michael Gray's left-wing cross with a towering header to hand the Wearsiders the lead six minutes earlier.
Magpies fan Don Hutchison countered Gary Speed's fourth-minute opener.
The Scottish international midfielder grabbed his fifth goal in four games in the 69th minute, firing home on the end of Kevin Phillips' left-wing centre.
Speed had given United a flying start with his fourth goal of the campaign when he hooked in after his initial header came back off a post.
