COUNCIL tenants in Durham are being urged to ignore a bogus letter asking them to take in strangers.
Some residents have been upset and confused after receiving the official-looking letter, saying that a homeless family is being sent to live with them.
The hoax purports to be from an officer for the homeless, and says the council has a scheme for tenants to share larger properties with the homeless.
Durham City Council corporate director of community services Brian Spears said: "The content of the letter has upset and confused some tenants.
"I have to stress it has nothing to do with the city council. If anyone else receives such a letter, put it straight in the bin.
"In Durham City, we have a well-managed system, which allocates homes and temporary accommodation for homeless people throughout the district.
"Anyone who would like to be reassured about letters they unexpectedly receive, which are written on official-looking paper, quoting the city council, is welcome to give us a ring, and we'll clarify the situation."
