YOUNGSTERS are being taught a lesson to ensure that what is expected to be one of this year's most popular Christmas presents does not lead to tragedy.
Backed by Cleveland Police, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council launched a scooter safety course yesterday.
The scheme, which is aimed at schools, consists of three one-hour training sessions putting children in the position of pedestrians to show them the danger scooters can cause.
The youngsters will also receive advice on road safety awareness and safety equipment.
Mike Hall, the council's road safety officer, said: "It looks as though these new micro scooters will be the biggest selling toy this Christmas, and we're sure there is a potential for problems.
"We're the first local authority in the region to organise these sessions, but I hope we won't be the last.
"It's essential youngsters are given some advice and awareness, just like the training lessons we give on cycling."
Inspector Mick Bennett, of Cleveland Police's road policing unit, said: "These scooters are classed as toys and certainly can be potentially dangerous on pavements and roads because their wheels are so small.
"We are delighted at the council's initiative and hope it will be a success."
