SHOPPERS will be able to park their cars in Darlington town centre without charge for four evenings in the run-up to Christmas.
Darlington Borough Council has approved plans to allow free parking in its car parks on the late-night shopping evenings before Christmas.
The plan is part of a campaign to attract Christmas shoppers to the town.
On four Thursdays before Christmas, free parking will be available from 4.30pm. The days will be November 30, December 7, December 14 and December 21.
The Cornmill Centre is offering the same concession in its car park in Crown Street.
The council estimates it will lose £650 a day in car parking revenue under the scheme.
Sunday parking is free in council car parks.
Councillor Nick Wallis, cabinet member for transport, said: "This is something we offer every year and it makes Darlington the best place to go Christmas shopping."
