AN environmental charity is urging people in the North-East to play their part in reducing waste.
Going for Green is campaigning to encourage shoppers to stop throwing away plastic bags.
Going for Green's North-East regional director, Marian Harrison, said: "Every time we throw away a plastic bag, it ends up either being buried in the ground or being incinerated.
"If it goes to a landfill site, it takes around 20 to 30 years to degrade and, since we're sending billions of bags each year to the dump, it's not surprising we're running out of holes to put our rubbish in."
The charity is urging people to buy re-usable, sturdier bags.
