POLICE are warning stores and off-licences to be vigilant in the run-up to Christmas.
An attempted burglary at the Asda store in Spennymoor, was foiled by staff in the early hours of Tuesday.
Thieves cut a hole in an electric fence around the store in St Andrew's Lane between 3.05am and 3.10am, but an alarm alerted staff and the intruders fled.
Police are linking the crime with an incident last week, when crates of alcohol were stolen from the store over night.
A spokesman for Newton Aycliffe Police said: "I would ask stores and shops to be extra cautious for the Christmas period when they're stocking up with booze."
The police want anyone who has any information about the two incidents to contact them on (01325) 314401.
