PUPILS in Darlington are above the national average in reading, writing and spelling at Key Stage 1.
However, they are below the national average in mathematics at the same stage.
The statistics for the year 2000 were presented to Darlington Borough Council's cabinet ratification committee last night.
They showed that pupils in the early primary school years were above the national average in reading by two per cent, writing by three per cent and spelling by seven per cent.
Darlington was below the national average in mathematics by two per cent.
At Key Stage 2, students were above average in maths by three per cent, but below it by one per cent in English and science.
Pupils at Key Stage 3 were above average by two per cent in English and by one per cent in mathematics. However, they were below average by one per cent in science.
Pupils gaining five or more A to C grades at GCSE increased by 2.2 per cent, and the performance of girls was better than boys in terms of achieving five or more A to C grades, with 3.1 per cent more girls gaining those grades.
