Darlington manager Gary Bennett's bid for a new striker looks doomed.
Bennett has been keeping an eye on a striker currently playing in the UniBond League Premier Division and made a move after watching him play for his League against the FA in a representative match in Lancaster last Monday.
Worksop's Adam Marsh last night netted twice for Quakers' second string in the 2-1 win over Wrexham at Feethams - but he is not Bennett's main target.
Marsh opened the scoring last night after half an hour, finishing neatly after robbing a defender and won the game with his second after good work from the impressive Jesper Hjorth.
Bennett won't disclose the name of his prime target who has scored over 20 goals this season for his club, but it is understood that the size and payment of the fee is causing problems.
Bennett said: "We've hit a brick wall with his club over the fee.
"We're willing to pay a certain amount, but they're wanting something different.
"At the moment, we can't agree, so we'll have to wait and see."
Bennett, however, will be speaking to Sunderland boss Peter Reid soon about extending Kevin Kyle's stay at Feethams.
Kyle has made three appearances since he arrived on loan from Sunderland, and Saturday's game at Blackpool will be his last before the month expires.
Bennett said: "We don't expect it to be a problem, because Peter is keen for Kevin to stay with us."
