A SNACK food manufacturer has launched a scheme to support workers who fall victim to domestic violence at home.
East Durham Domestic Violence Forum and Durham Agency Against Crime (Daac) have developed the initiative introduced yesterday by Walkers, at its Peterlee factory.
Employees will receive advice about domestic violence, and information on support groups.
Managers at Walkers, a major employer in the area, have given their full support to the scheme, which is believed to be the first in the North-East.
Chief Inspector Laz Szomoru, executive manager of Daac, said: "A strategy for the workplace makes good sense, because domestic violence can affect job performance and the economy of the company.
"Domestic violence is a serious issue and one which many of us struggle with and leave in the 'too hard tray'.
"But Walkers has pledged its workplace will be a leading support to victims.
"The commitment shown by the company, the agency and the work of East Durham Domestic Violence Forum, means the subject has now been taken out of the 'too hard tray'."
It is estimated one in four women experience abuse in the home at some point in their lives.
Those who suffer are likely to experience repeat victimisation and need medical help
