A NATIONAL Express driver has been suspended following allegations that he began to doze off while driving a coach full of passengers on the A1.
The driver is said to have struggled to control the vehicle which was travelling between London and Edinburgh on Monday night.
Having endured a nerve-wracking ride through North Yorkshire and the North-East, passengers mutinied, insisting someone else drive the coach.
He was replaced at the wheel at Buckton on the A1 in Northumberland, about 30 miles north of Alnwick.
Passenger Andrew Hendrie, from Sussex - a former bus driver with a public service vehicle licence - then drove the 591 service to Edinburgh.
National Express director Kevin Bennett said a "thorough investigation" had been launched and the driver involved had been suspended.
