YOUNGSTERS charged with writing, rehearsing and staging a play in one week were on course for success, yesterday.
Pupils from seven comprehensive schools in Durham and Chester-le-Street are working together to produce the play about domestic violence against women. It is for international White Ribbon Day, which aims to highlight the subject of domestic violence against women across the world.
The youngsters are rehearsing at The Hermitage School, Chester-le-Street, and the play will be performed at St Nicholas Church Hall on Saturday. Two young actors from each of the schools will perform.
The event is being organised by the North Durham Domestic Violence Forum, which includes police, local councils, social services, probation and health professionals, and representatives from a women's refuge.
Youngsters are working alongside a professional director, actors and technical crew from Derwentside theatre group Cap-a-Pie.
A police spokesman said the county force was taking the event seriously. Police dealt with 533 complaints of domestic violence in Chester-le-Street and Durham, in six months this year.
Chairman of the North Durham Forum Don Neave said: "We hope the play will bring home the scale of the problem."
