POLICE are hunting a man who left petrol station staff fearing they were going to be robbed.
The man entered the Shell Parkgate station in Yarm Road, Darlington, wearing a balaclava or ski mask and carrying what was believed to be a weapon.
A female cashier ran into a back room to trigger an alarm and the man fled.
It is thought he jumped over a wall and headed towards Sanderson Street, following the incident, at about 8.10pm on Tuesday night.
Police called in the air support unit to sweep the area for the man, but no trace of him was found.
Inspector Ian Coates, of Darlington police, said yesterday: "We are convinced that this was an attempted theft, or robbery, and are appealing for witnesses.
"Anyone who saw a person acting suspiciously in that area at that time should get in touch."
Anyone with information is asked to call (01325) 467681.
