CAMPAIGNERS backing Gateshead and Newcastle's bid to win the title of European Capital of Culture in 2008 believe the millennium bridge could be the key to success.
The arrival of the bridge made national and international headlines and was seen by million of television viewers in many countries, including Germany, Holland, Japan, Australia and Canada.
Newcastle Gateshead Initiative chairman Sir Ian Wrigglesworth said: "The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is absolutely stunning.
"It has exceeded everyone's expectations and has launched us into the whole new era."
The Newcastle Gateshead bid to become European Capital of Culture 2008 is led by the Newcastle Gateshead Initiative on behalf of Gateshead Metroppolitan Borough Council and Newcastle City Council.
Sir Ian said: "The new bridge links £1billion of new development and the heritage and cultural attractions of both sides of the River Tyne, creating a gold square mile for visitors.
"It will be a waterfront to rival that of any major European city. This helps put us at the forefront of the competition for the European Capital of Culture."
