Worthington CIU Winter League
Wheatley Hill A took the first point at Stanley Central with a win by Alan Hall, but then the home side took over and prevented the Hill from moving to the top of the First Division. The Central's winners were Michael Vicary, Jim Dufton with a 37 break, Walter Cornell and Harold Grimes.
Willington faced their toughest game to date this season to hold their unbeaten record at the top of the Second Division. Ferryhill were the hosts and went ahead through Ian Roddam. Jeremy Martin levelled but Bernie Jones restored the home lead only to see Tom Parkin equalise. In the decider Paul Atkinson beat Billy Roddam.
Old Shildon moved four points clear at the top of the First Division after they took the first three points at home to Shotton Palms through Michael Pratt, Frank Nicholson and Steven Bennett. Barry Hall pulled one back for the Palms and then John Armstrong beat the home side's Billy Goggins, who put in a 36 break.
Spennymoor B went two points clear at the top of the Third Division after they only dropped one point to the visiting Sacriston team, who had Willy Nixon as their only winner. The home winners were Alan Shaw, Stu Ball, Micky Anderson and Wayne Parry.
Wheatley Hill B were twice ahead of the visiting Spennymoor A team with wins from Terry Ellison and David Blyth but Eddie Rhodes and Paul Biddle with 31 and 29 breaks levelled. In the decider the Moors' Ronnie Bateman beat Steve Cave.
Fishburn A were twice in front of the visiting Brandon but were beaten when John hall put in a 30 break to beat Charlie Hirst. John Carter and Peter Davison were the early Fishburn winners with Brian Graham and Kevin Sample winning for Brandon.
Only Ronnie Hall managed to take a point for Newton Aycliffe when they entertained Cockton Hill, who had wins from Kevin Mordica with a 35 break, George Chapman, Harold Lomax and Andrew Aisbitt with a 37 break.
In a re-arranged game Brandon went down in the decider at home to Newton Aycliffe when Stuart Neil beat Kevin Sample on the black. John Hall and Brian Graham won for Brandon with Ritchie Young and Michael Hewitt setting up the decider.
Belmont took the first three points at home to Hunwick A through George Blakelock, Chris Morley and Steven Armstrong but wins from the visitors' Trevor Cook and Tom Ward made the score respectable.
Crowtrees moved up to share second place in the Second Division when they only dropped one point to the visiting Newhouse A, who had Stephen Mountain with a 29 break as their only winner. The home winners were Jim Phillipson, Phil Whitfield, Sonny Hann and Keith McLauchlan.
Meadowfield got back into the title race in the Second Division when they only dropped one point to the visiting Durham City. Norman Smith, Craig Hughes, Malcolm Hughes and Alan Ather won for the home side with Gary Ward scoring the lone point for the visitors.
Sherburn Village moved up the Second Division after whitewashing their hosts at Langley Park with wins from Adrian Twist, John Bower, Alan Greener, Alan Bower and Scott Mallaburn.
In the Third Division Newhouse B and Fishburn B share the second place two points behind Spennymoor B after the Newhouse team only dropped one point to the visiting Fishburn, who had Winston Hodgson as their lone scorer. Brian Eltringham, John O'Driscoll, Richard Bell and Alan McCluskey won for Newhouse.
Leeholme A went two up at Tow Law A with wins from Barry Shaw and Ian North. Stephen Laing and Bill McCluskey levelled the match and then Ken Robinson took the Lawyers to victory by beating Lawrence Jones.
Leeholme B twice were ahead of the visiting Billy Row but were eventually beaten when Gordon Sample beat Ian Catterson in the decider. Keith Thompson put Leeholme ahead with Alan Hodgson levelling. Ray Gill restored the Leeholme lead with ken Rider setting up the decider.
Hunwick B twice trailed the visiting West Auckland before they came through in the decider. Shaun Reynolds put West ahead with Barry Fleming levelling. David Geraty then won for the visitors with Norman Kirkley equalising. In the decider Hunwick's Ian Mason beat Chris Kitch.
