VILLAGERS are being invited to join a tree-planting record attempt.
About 150 birch, pine, oak, hawthorn and blackthorn, will be planted on the recreation ground at Cockfield, near Bishop Auckland, on Saturday, as part of environmental improvements to the village.
The event is part of The Tree Council's National Tree Week, which aims to set a world record for planting the most trees over three days.
County Durham Environmental Trust has given £50,000 for environmental schemes in the village. The work has also been funded by Teesdale District Council, the European and Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund, the Single Regeneration Budget and the parish council.
The tree-planting will take place at Cockfield Recreation Ground, from 10am to 2pm
