A GENEROUS gift from a resident and council sponsorship is returning a touch of festive cheer to a village green.

In recent years, Norton Green, on Teesside, has had a Christmas tree sponsored by a large business. But the business has changed hands, and when a replacement sponsor could not be found, a tree-less Christmas seemed on the cards.

However, a generous resident, who does not wish to be named, stepped in to pay for a tree, through the auspices of the Norton Business Association.

Stockton Borough Council's housing and contract services department has agreed to sponsor the installation and lighting of the tree, expected to be on Monday.

Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton council's cabinet member for housing and community safety and a ward councillor for Norton, helped to make the arrangements.

He said: "This is a great all-round community effort and I'm delighted that we've been able to help.

"Since it first appeared a few years ago, the Christmas tree has virtually become a tradition for Norton and the Green. I'm delighted the council has been able to support what is a very valued seasonal gesture."

Dave Scullion, secretary of Norton Business Association and the local sub-postmaster, said: "The tree has become a focus for local festivities. Our annual carol service has taken place around the tree every year since the tree has been here and it has grown beyond anyone's expectations. It raises a lot of money for local churches and I'd love to see it bigger than ever this year.

"On behalf of the Norton Business Association. I would like to thank both the council and the mystery donor for sponsoring the tree this year - let's hope it continues in the future.
