A SMALL piece of sporting history will be going under the hammer next week - to help save lives in North Yorkshire.
A square of Wembley turf will be among items at an auction in aid of the intensive care unit at Northallerton's Friarage Hospital.
The grass comes with a certificate of authenticity, and will be a lasting memory of the scene of some of England's greatest triumphs, and disasters, to the lucky buyer.
Cricket legend Ian Botham has donated a bat signed by the England team, and has also pledged a signed England shirt when he returns from the Pakistan tour.
His son Liam is also doing his bit for the cause, by getting team members from Newcastle Falcons rugby union side to sign a ball.
Spice Girl Mel C and veteran rockers Status Quo have given signed CDs, GMTV's Eamonn Holmes has given two of his favourite silk ties, and Coronation Street's Natalie Barnes has donated a T-shirt.
Intensive therapy unit assistant Helen Clough has amassed 75 gifts to auction, after a busy few weeks of writing to individuals and companies.
"People have been incredibly kind and generous.
"I cannot thank everyone enough," she said.
The auction will take place in the nurses' recreation room at the Friarage, on Friday, at 7.30pm. Proceeds will go towards the purchase of more equipment for the unit
