A VICAR has appealed to thieves for the return of a wheelchair.
The wheelchair at St Mark's Church, in North Road, Darlington, was used to help parishioners with walking difficult to get from their cars to the seats, or to convey them from care homes.
The wheelchair was stolen in the last few days.
The church has been plagued by thefts in recent months. In September, the microwave oven was stolen from the church hall, and money for the parish magazine was also taken.
"Now we don't keep money in the church at all," said the Reverend June Robson, vicar of St Mark's.
But, she said she thought the wheelchair, which was taken between November 19 and last Wednesday morning, was safe.
"People know that is used for elderly or handicapped people. You don't expect them to steal things like that," she said.
"It's hard not to be angry and upset when you see elderly, handicapped people having to struggle to their seats."
Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact Darlington police on (01325) 467681.
