A NEW group is striking a blow for self defence by teaching youngsters how to avoid being attacked.
Martial Arts Trained was set up by three judo experts with the intent of arming people with the skills needed to ward off assailants.
Since it began in October, the group has already visited a number of workplaces with its programme, which incorporates basic judo moves.
Now it has widened its scope to run a six-week course for year 11 students at Middlesbrough's Nunthorpe School.
Tracy Woods, one of the partners in the scheme, said the training offered had been well received.
"It's something anyone can take part in, and since we started, we've had several calls from all sorts of people asking us to run classes," she said.
"The girls at Nunthorpe School are enjoying them very much."
Classes at the school take place every Thursday and Friday and will continue until December 15.
Ms Woods said she believes that they will equip the students with vital skills for the future.
"They are going to progress into work or college being much more independent," she said.
