PEOPLE are failing to heed police warnings about sneak-in burglars targeting homes in Chester-le-Street.
Officers last week urged homeowners to guard against the thieves who simply walk into houses through unlocked doors, often while people are at home. Police believe the burglars watch people's homes, waiting for the owner to be out of the way.
The warning was prompted by a string of thefts from private homes in Brackenbeds Close, Pelton, and nearby Ouston.
Four more raids took place, in Urpeth Grange, near Ouston and The Avenue, in Chester-le-Street, on Monday evening. Cash and handbags were stolen.
Detective Inspector Andy Reddick, of Durham City CID, said: "We have constantly warned people about this but they are still leaving their doors insecure.
"We would urge people to keep their doors locked because homes in these areas are being targeted."
Det Insp Reddick said extra officers had been drafted in to boost patrols in the Chester-le-Street area. Local people have been warned via Neighbourhood Watch groups
