HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to be on their guard against bogus callers after a spate of incidents involving a company claiming to represent a council.
Hambleton District Council issued the warning after several Northallerton residents received visits from a home security firm saying it represented the authority.
The council's director of planning and environmental services, Steve Quartermain, said: "It is vital that residents are on their guard against such people, especially with the demand for tradesmen following the recent floods. It is easy to be taken in by these bogus callers."
Mr Quartermain said anybody calling on behalf of the council would have photographic identity cards.
"The message is simple: if you are unsure about someone's identity, do not let them into your home," he said.
Anyone wanting to check the validity of a council employee can contact the authority on (01609) 779977.
