NORTON is to have a Christmas tree after all - thanks to an anonymous donor.
The village faced the bleak prospect of no tree on the green for the first time in years, because the firm which sponsored it each year it has changed hands.
But a resident, who does not wish to be named, stepped in this week to offer a tree through Norton business association and Stockton council matched the gift by agreeing to pay for its installation and lights.
Coun Steve Nelson, cabinet member for housing and community safety and a Norton ward councillor, helped complete the arrangements. "This is a great, all-round community effort," he said. "I am delighted we have been able to help.
Mr Dave Scullion, secretary of the business association, said: "The tree has become a focus for local festivities. Our annual carol service has been held around the tree every year and the event has grown beyond anyone's expectations. It raises a lot of money for local churches.
"On behalf of the association, I thank the council and the mystery donor for sponsoring the tree. "
