A FREE gardening service for elderly and disabled people has received a boost courtesy of the Council's Pride in Hartlepool campaign.
The Voluntary Initiative Project (VIP), run by Owton Fens Community Association, has been awarded grants totalling £5,135, which have been used to buy tools; a chipping machine for mulching garden waste and a trailer.
Ken Fox, project coordinator, said: "We spend a lot of time returning to jobs after three or four weeks to tackle further weed growth. By mulching waste and putting it on to gardens we hope to reduce the need for such regular maintenance. This will free volunteers to tackle more new jobs."
Vikki Law, project manager with local waste firm, SWS, which supports the campaign, added: "I think this is an excellent project and we are delighted to be offering our support."
VIP also offers a painting and decorative service and can be contacted on (01429) 283187.
