Tees RC
Club president Ian Godman was in excellent humour at Monday's annual meeting - and with good reason. The club have enjoyed one of their most successful seasons, winning 48 trophies. He congratulated retiring captain, Paul Buckworth, who has led the club for the past three years. The successes were spread over a full spectrum of age groups from the juniors at 12 to the most senior veterans who are into their sixties.
Kate O'Sullivan reported that the annual regatta in May on the barrage course at Stockton had again been voted one of the best in the region. Unfortunately the long distance sculling race planned for October had to be cancelled for safety reasons because of the river's high rate of flow. Treasurer Jane Vaslet said that the club finances were in a healthy condition and that with the aid of sponsorship from Sondes Engineering and Sportsmatch new equipment for the junior section will be purchased shortly. Secretary David Francis confirmed that membership continued to expand and there had been a noticeable increase in interest after the highly successful Olympics.
Officers elected: President, Ian Godman; Captain, Andrew Pickering; Treasurer, Jane Vaslet; Assistant Treasurer, Steve Vaslet; secretary, David Francis; Assistant Secretary, Julie Gray; Press Officer, Chris Kenyon; Safety Officer, Dilwyn Jones; Facilities Manager, John Inman.
The Tees was well represented at York Small Boats Head of the River Race last weekend. Competitors from all four Tees clubs - Tees Rowing Club, Yarm School Rowing Club, University of Teesside Rowing Club and University of Durham Stockton Campus Boat Club were in action along with nearly 200 other entries from all over the north of England. Despite the dreadful problems caused by recent flooding, hosts York City Rowing Club put on an excellent day's racing which resulted in a number of wins for local clubs.
Results: Tees RC won Veteran C Fours and Veteran B single sculls (Johnny Cooper). Yarm School won Junior 18 Quadruple Sculls and University of Teesside won Senior 2 Coxless Pairs.
For their final competition of year Tees rowers will be at the Rutherford Head of the River Race from Scotswood to Newburn on the River Tyne on December 9
