LIFEBOATMEN who braved treacherous weather conditions to rescue an elderly yachtsman are to be honoured for their heroics.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has announced that it will honour crew members who had to use extraordinary measures by torchlight to save 70-year-old Donald Dean after his vessel was swamped off the coast of Staithes, North Yorkshire.
Keith Elliot, 54, and Stephen Ireland, 35, played a major role in the rescue last September, which involved the Whitby lifeboat and the smaller Staithes and Runswick lifeboat.
Mr Iredale is to receive the bronze medal, while Mr Elliot will receive a certificate of thanks for his part in the rescue.
Staithes crew members Sean Baxter, 43, and Colin Harrison, 40, will also be awarded a medal, certificate and badge
