THOUSANDS of white lights were switched on in Darlington railway station yesterday.
Mary Butterwick, founder of the Butterwick Hospice, performed the ceremony to light up the Christmas Tree of Lights on the station concourse.
Before the switch-on there was a service of dedication and carols by the Salvation Army.
All proceeds from the Light up a Life appeal will go to the Butterwick Children's Hospice. The public can sponsor a light on the Tree of Lights in honour of a loved one or friends.
The tree, which was provided by Great North Eastern Railways, will remain in place until 12th night, which is January 6 next year.
Anyone wishing to shine a light this Christmas for a special loved one can do so by contacting the Butterwick Children's Hospice on (01642) 624231 for an application form
