A FATHER-OF-THREE was jailed yesterday after a drug sniffer dog caught him trying to smuggle cannabis into Durham jail.
Gary Waggett, 38, from South Shields, was visiting his brother, Sean, on August 14 last year when the cannabis was found taped to his stomach.
Newcastle Crown Court heard that the dog pinpointed Waggett as soon as he entered the jail.
Prison staff were alerted and he confessed to being in possession of cannabis resin, which he had brought in for his brother.
Waggett, of Fossway, South Shields, was jailed for six weeks after he admitted being found in possession of cannabis resin.
Judge David Hodson told him: "If anyone tries to take drugs into a prison their sentence can only be custody."
He also admitted a charge of burglary with his 30-year-old brother at the Colliery Tavern pub, Sunderland, in July.
Sean Waggett, of Dock Street, South Shields, was jailed for three years after admitting a string of burglaries.
Stewart Gardiner, 28, of Perth Road, Plains Farm, Sunderland, was given 80 hours' community service after he admitted handling the stolen goods from one of the houses that Sean Waggett burgled.
