BIN collections should be back to normal across east Cleveland next week, after the suspension of industrial action.
As revealed in The Northern Echo this week, Redcar MP Mo Mowlam has helped create a truce between Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and its cleansing staff, who staged two one-day strikes and banned overtime.
The workers' contracts were to have expired on Wednesday, which would have meant them losing their jobs, but a deadline for accepting shift changes and new working conditions has been extended to January 19.
The council hopes bin collections will return to normal, possibly by next Monday.
Arrangements for Christmas are being drawn up by the council, and will be advertised.
Mike Hardman, the council's assistant director of direct works, said: "We are now in a position to deploy additional men and vehicles to tackle the backlog as quickly as possible.
"Our priority is to collect those bins which should have been collected.''
