A WELL-known leisure centre could face demolition to make way for a supermarket.
Yesterday, Stockton council was discussing the future of Billingham Forum, which was opened by the Queen in 1967.
A report on redevelopment of the town centre recommends a superstore should be built on the site; a sport and leisure complex should be created opposite the Forum; new education, arts and community facilities be provided; fewer shops and better shop frontages; and improved car parking.
The proposal to demolish the Forum could spark considerable opposition. The building houses a theatre, ice rink, swimming pool and sports facilities.
A report being put to councillors says the facility offers limited community use and few daytime activities.
Planning officers want the redevelopment to go ahead but only with an agreement for a new "theatre-type" facility as part of the package
