COUNCILLORS are expected to back plans for a 56-bed resource centre to be established by a private firm, at a meeting next week.
Care UK has submitted proposals to build an integrated resource centre adjacent to the former Woodside Elderly Person's Home, in Cavendish Road, Middlesbrough.
The firm, which used to run the home, plans to create 56 bed spaces for elderly people with mental health problems, which would be leased to Middlesbrough Borough Council at a discount for a minimum of five years.
Councillors are expected to endorse an agreement with Care UK to help relieve the pressure on hospitals, and provide a more integrated approach to mental health care for the elderly.
A report to the social services cabinet states: "Further progress with this project is wholly dependent on the disposal of the site to Care UK."
