POLICE investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who fell 100ft from a Newcastle bridge are still no closer to establishing exactly what happened.
The man, from Gateshead, was found lying in a pool of blood in the middle of a city road after the death plunge on Sunday night.
Police are trying to piece together the man's final moments before he was found by a pub doorman fatally wounded under the High Level Bridge.
He had fallen and landed near the Cooperage on the Quayside.
Despite attempts to save his life by the doorstaff and paramedics, he died from his injuries minutes after the incident, which happened at about 9.15pm.
Detectives do not know how the man came to fall from the bridge, but at this stage they are not treating the death as suspicious.
They are appealing for anyone crossing the bridge about the same time, either on foot or by car, who may have seen the man before he fell off the bridge, to contact them.
The man, who has not yet been named, was 5ft 10in, and wearing denim jeans, a blue zip-up fleece jacket and trainers. He had short, dark hair.
A police spokesman said: "We need to know if he jumped or was pushed.
"We believe the man was on his own when it happened, which is why it is so important for potential witnesses to contact us."
Witnesses should contact police on 0191-214 6555.
