ONE of Yorkshire's most famous inns is to re-open in time for Christmas, after a local family came to its rescue.
Mr Michael Theakston had been one of the most regular customers at the White Bear in Masham, and was devastated, along with many others, when it closed 15 months ago.
However, with the help of his four sons, Mr Theakston is to re-open the pub, which will have a strong emphasis on quality cask ales and quality food prepared using fresh, local produce.
Sue Thomas, who was previously manager at the Farmers Arms at Helperby, has been appointed manager, and experienced kitchen and bar staff have also been recruited.
"When my father asked my brothers and me if we would like to join him in getting the White Bear up and running again, we didn't hesitate," said Mr Simon Theakston. "The White Bear has always been so much part of Masham and many people from the surrounding area were very upset when it closed.
"It is a very exciting challenge for us all and we are delighted that Sue Thomas will be managing the pub as she has just the right experience and dedication required to put the White Bear back on the map."
The bar at the White Bear will re-open the week before Christmas and full dining facilities will be available in January, with the official re-opening celebrations being held in the New Year
