CASSIE the dog has already won a special place in the hearts of patients and staff at Darlington Memorial hospital, and now she has won a trophy as well.
The three-year-old German shepherd and retriever cross is a regular visitor at the hospital with her owner, Mrs Terry Bolan of Davidson Road, Darlington, as part of the work done by the charity Pets as Therapy.
Earlier this year they took part in the charity's Northern Walkover 2000 and raised £275, the most by anyone in the region.
The pair will receive a trophy and a small gift in recognition of their efforts at the Pets at Home store, Yarm Road, Darlington, tomorrow.
PAT dogs visit hospitals, hospices, residential homes, day centres and special schools bringing love and comfort to patients, as well as often helping in treatments and therapy. They often help stroke victims to use their limbs again or can help phobic patients to live a normal life in the community.
Mrs Bolan said: "I got involved with Pets as Therapy about eight years ago with a labrador I had at the time. I take Cassie into wards 11, 14 and 51 at the Memorial for two hours every Sunday afternoon; the staff and patients love her."
"It's very interesting to meet lots of different people and some of the patients don't get many visitors. You need plenty of commitment and although it can be difficult at times, especially when patients you have got to know pass away, it is very rewarding work."
