West Cornforth Primary School's nursery unit has received £1,000 towards building an adventure trail from construction materials company Lafarge Redland Aggregates, which has a unit at nearby Thrislington.
The money was allocated from landfill tax credits received from the Government and administered in the North-East by the County Durham Environmental Trust.
Equipment for the trail, which is made up of wood and includes logs, a small bridge and a sandpit, cost £3,500 and was met by the nursery's fundraising activities.
Thrislington works manager Dave Wilcox said: "Lafarge was delighted to be able to help with the project that will benefit the education of local young children."
Nearly 80 children, aged three and four, attend the nursery.
Head of the nursery, Christine Wilkinson, said: "The children really enjoy using the new facility. It is a big step forward for our nursery.
"We are planning to connect it with a new wildlife area which will further our environmental studies.
