SOME of the brawniest men in the region will be pitted against each other in the North-East Strongman of the Year competition today.
The contest, which has attracted 11 competitors, will be held at the Stanley Youth Centre, in Wear Road, Stanley, County Durham.
Among the strongmen are Scarborough policeman Mel Kay, who won through to the British strongman finals this year; and Dave Arnett, of Stanley, who won a bronze in the 1999 Masters Weightlifting Championships.
The contestants will compete in a range of tests of strength from 1.30pm to 5pm. These include a log lift, Hercules hold, wheel flip and back-to-back tug-of-war.
Entrance to the event is £1.
