A STRING of shops that sell a range of innovative equipment designed to make life easier for people with a disability has opened in County Durham.
The Home Independence Shops, launched by Durham County Council, are located in County Durham Care's award-winning day centres for people with physical disability or sensory impairment, in Pity Me, Spennymoor, Stanley and Peterlee.
They are equipped with a large selection of innovative products designed to promote independence and make everyday tasks easier. These include path hoists, television magnifiers, cutlery and slippers.
Many of the products would make ideal Christmas gifts for elderly or disabled people.
The staff who work the shops are fully trained and able to give detailed information and advice.
They encourage people to try out equipment before they buy it, and can arrange in-store or home demonstrations.
Although they have only been open for a short time, the shops have been well received so far.
Ivy Craggs, who works in the Abbey Cay Centre's shop, said: "Everything we sell is available at a very competitive prices, and if people have a recognised medical condition they don't have to pay Vat."
Anyone wishing to find out more about their nearest shop and opening times is asked to telephone Dawn Hirst on 0191-383 5150
