POLICE are appealing for information after two masked raiders tried to rob a high street bank as it closed.
The bungled raid happened just after 5pm, on Thursday, as staff were closing the HSBC bank in Market Place, Barnard Castle, County Durham.
The raiders, who were wearing dark clothing and ski masks, forced their way into the back of the bank, but were forced to flee empty-handed when staff raised the alarm.
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen two suspicious men waiting outside the bank, or seen the men drive off in a vehicle, to come forward.
Detective Constable Tony McDougall, of Bishop Auckland CID, said: "It is a strong possibility they struck at that time in the belief the bank would have closed for the night and the premises would be empty."
