A STRING of shops that sell a range of equipment designed to make life easier for people with a disability has opened in County Durham.
The Home Independence Shops, launched by Durham County Council, are located in County Durham Care's award-winning day centres for people with physical disability or sensory impairment in Pity Me, Spennymoor, Stanley and Peterlee.
They are equipped with a large selection of products designed to promote independence and make every day tasks easier - from path hoists and TV magnifiers, to cutlery and slippers.
Many of the products would make ideal Christmas gifts for elderly or disabled residents.
The staff who work at the shops are fully trained and able to give detailed information and advice.
They encourage people to try out equipment before they buy it and can arrange in-store or home demonstrations.
Although they have only been open for a short time, the shops have so far been well received.
Ivy Craggs, who works in the Abbey Day Centre's shop, said: "Everything we sell is available at very competitive prices, and also if people have a recognised medical condition they don't have to pay VAT."
If you would like to find out more about your nearest shop and their opening times call Dawn Hirst on 0191-383 5150.
