COLLEAGUES have been paying tribute to the "father'' of Richmondshire District Council, who died in hospital after falling ill during one of the authority's meetings last week.
William James Corps, 85, served on the former Richmond Rural District Council until local government reorganisation in 1974.
He then represented the parishes of Middleton Tyas, Moulton and North Cowton on the new administration, serving as chairman of planning and as an expert on transport matters.
Colleague Katherine Carr said yesterday: "I will always remember how fiercely he fought for those he was elected to represent.
He was known to us as the father of the council because his service and dedication were so well respected.''
Councillor Corps, known as Jim to his friends, was awarded an MBE in recognition of his work in local government.
Richmondshire District Council leader, John Blackie, said: "I knew him for his gritty performances in the council chamber.
"Jim Corps always spoke up for what he thought was important and not just what the council's officers were recommending.''
A funeral service is due to be held at 1pm, at St Michael's and All Angels Church, Middleton Tyas, on Wednesday
