A MAN died when he fell 60ft from a clifftop at a popular fishing spot at the weekend.
The 34-year-old, from South Tyneside, who has not been named, was fishing with a friend from cliffs south of Souter Point Lighthouse, known as the Wary, in Whitburn, South Tyneside, when the accident happened.
A police spokesman said a search and rescue operation was mounted by police and the coastguard after the incident was reported at 9pm on Friday.
The man was found by a police helicopter in the sea close to the base of the cliffs.
He was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after efforts to resuscitate him failed.
Police are not identifying the man until relatives have been informed.
