WORK to redevelop a green area on a Crook estate is expected to start in the New Year, after a year of planning.
The site on the Watergate Estate was chosen to be revamped as part of a big redevelopment of the area.
The scheme has been led by the Helmington Row and Wheatbottom Community Action Group, in partnership with environmental organisation Groundwork West Durham and Wear Valley District Council.
Debbie Ingoldsby, of Groundwork West Durham, said: "The area was highlighted by residents as being in need of improvement. At the moment, it is just a green space with a couple of swings on it."
Public meetings and discussions have been held to debate what work should be done. Now the finalised plans are ready and funding has been obtained from Barclays Bank's Site Saver Scheme, the County Durham Foundation and the European Union.
Pathways will be created, and trees and bulbs planted, while youngsters in the area will be asked to help to create a centrepiece on the green
