NEWCASTLE has the highest number of asylum seekers in the region, figures reveal.
There are 9,168 people living in the city, waiting to see if they can stay in this country.
Sunderland has 1,747 asylum seekers, followed by Redcar and Cleveland with 1,503. York has 323 people, while Darlington has the lowest number, 25.
The figures, released by Immigration Minister Barbara Roche following a Parliamentary question, reveal there are 2.5m people in the country who are seeking to make a new life for themselves.
It costs the Home Office £119 a week to support a single asylum seeker, while a family costs £242
