THE first residents have moved into a £2.7m housing development on South Tyneside.
Nine bungalows for pensioners have been built in a courtyard at Haylands Square, on the Harton Moor Estate, South Shields.
The development, by the Nomad Housing Group, is part of a larger scheme, which is due to be completed in the New Year.
This will see 43 homes, including homes for the disabled and for families, being built by the group in conjunction with South Tyneside Council.
Sharon McMahon, Nomad's senior home ownership advisor, said the majority of the three-bedroom, semi-detached homes, which are due to be completed in the New Year, had already been sold.
"The scheme has proved so popular that we have advanced the start of the fifth and final phase of building works, which involves a further 11 detached and semi-detached properties,'' she said.
South Tyneside Council's deputy leader John Temple praised the development, saying: "A former problematic area for the council is now being transformed.
