A COUNCIL is being urged to modify traffic control proposals for a busy road.

Problems with motorists speeding along Coniscliffe Road, Darlington, has prompted the borough council to consider reducing the width of the road to slow down traffic.

Although people in the area favour the scheme, there is concern about the effect it will have on two properties.

Residents at 198 and 200 Coniscliffe Road would not be able to park outside their homes if the road was narrowed, and two ward councillors have take up their case.

Councillors Jim Ruck and Heather Scott have written to the council, asking if the traffic funnel could be sited further along the road.

"We all want the scheme to go ahead, because there are problems with motorists speeding in Coniscliffe Road," said Coun Ruck.

"But some residents are concerned that they will not be able to park outside their homes, and this could have an effect on the price of their properties.

"We are asking if the scheme could be modified so it removes this problem."

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said: "We cannot move the scheme because it is going to be near to the school crossing patrol.

"Coniscliffe Road is one of the busiest in the town, and narrowing it at this section will help to slow traffic and, hopefully, avoid any accidents."
